The following pages were obtained from Mr. Charles Mulligan of Haigler, NE, to whom I am indebted for his willingness to part with them. He found them at a farm auction for the Rhinehart Lunzmann estate, Enders, Nebraska, an old farm settled by German brothers. This area of Nebraska, near McCook, close to the Colorado and Kansas borders, is some pretty lonely country, and one can just imagine the joy that these lessons brought to the people who received them in the mail. These show (I believe) the complete lesson plan for the mandolin instruction course from the Chicago Correspondence School of Music. Note, that even though the instruction pages are from the Chicago Corresondence School of Music, the music pages for all of these lessons are not copyrighted by the Chicago Correspondence School. Lessons 1-9 are "Copyright 1914 by Slingerland's Correspondence School of Music, Chicago, IL." The music for Lessons 10-24 all are labeled as violin lessons and are all copyright "H. H. Slingerland, Chicago, Ill." except for Lesson 12, which is copyright MCMXXIII (1923) by "Slingerland's Correspondence School of Music, Chicago." Lessons 10-11 & 13-16 are copyright 1911, while lessons 17-24 are copyright 1912. Thanks to page 12, this dates this lesson plan at no earlier than 1923, even though the instruction materials that were being used were from a decade earlier. It should be noted that most of the instruction pages were all hand typed... only page 2 from Lesson 1, Lessons 3, 20-22, & 24 were mimeographed. Only on Page 1 of Lesson 21 is the address given: 1632 N Halstead. |
